Dubai Tournament: Iga Swiatek Defeated in Semi-Finals

(Dubai) In the Dubai Championships, top seed Iga Swiatek suffered a loss, falling 6-4, 6-4 to Russian qualifier Anna Kalinskaya in the semi-finals on Friday.

The Polish player squandered a 4-2 lead in the initial set.

This win marked Kalinskaya’s third consecutive triumph over a top 10 ranked player, following victories against Coco Gauff and Jelena Ostapenko.

In the finals, Kalinskaya will face off against Italian Jasmine Paolini, who emerged victorious against Sorana Cirstea, winning 6-2 and 7-6 (6).

Paolini skillfully averted six set-points in the second set.

Following the match, the 28-year-old Italian joked about the suspenseful end to the match in a post-game interview on the court.

After defeating the Romanian player in just under two hours, 26th-ranked Paolini is one win away from her second title.

Paolini, who managed to reach the fourth round in Melbourne last month (her best Grand Slam performance), would eventually lose in straight sets to Kalinskaya.

With this victory, Paolini will break into the top 20 for the first time in the upcoming Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.

Her solitary title victory came in 2021 in Portoroz, Slovenia.

In the doubles semi-finals, Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealander Erin Routliffe are set to take on Storm Hunter and Katerina Siniakova. The match kicked off at noon.
